October 29, 2026
On Friday, November 27, the Currituck Beach Lighthouse gate opens at 9 a.m. and the first visitors pay $13 to climb. At 11 a.m., tents open across the grounds of Whalehead for the 11th Annual Christmas Craft Village. The craft village packs up at 4 p.m., and at that same hour Corolla Village Christmas opens on Corolla Village Lane. The lighthouse closes at 5, the village stays lit until 8, and inside Whalehead a candlelight tour starts at 5 that nobody can book anymore.
Line those times up and each event picks up as or before the last one winds down, so from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. there is no gap. If you're hosting family in Corolla over Thanksgiving, everything that day is free or paid at the door except the candlelight tour, and that one sold out a month ahead.
The weekend starts early on Thanksgiving morning. The Wild Turkey Thanksgiving Day 5K and 1-Mile at Whalehead runs on November 26. Race-day check-in is 6:30 to 7:40 a.m., the fun run starts at 7:55, the 5K starts at 8:15, and post-race hospitality and awards run from 8:50 to 9:30.
Running guests will be done before 10, but they won't be climbing the lighthouse that afternoon. The operator lists the Currituck Beach Lighthouse as closed on Thanksgiving Day, the same as it closes for thunder and big storms. Thursday's one public event in the area is over by mid-morning. For guests who wake up on Thursday expecting a climb, the next chance is Friday morning.
Here is the Friday handoff using each organizer's published times for 2026.
| Time | Event | Location | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. | Currituck Beach Lighthouse climbs, weather permitting | Currituck Beach Lighthouse | $13 at the gate |
| 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. | 11th Annual Christmas Craft Village | Whalehead, 1100 Club Rd. | Free |
| 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. | Corolla Village Christmas | Corolla Village Lane, starting at Schoolhouse Lane | Free |
| 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. | Whalehead Christmas Candlelight Tour | Whalehead | $20, sold out |
The lighthouse has no advance or online ticketing. You pay at the front of the lighthouse with cash, check or credit card. The Northern Outer Banks lists the craft village as free, and it lists Corolla Village Christmas as free with no tickets required. So a household can plan the whole Friday without a single reservation, which suits a day when the guest count tends to change by breakfast.
The craft village is a one-day outdoor show. Organizers describe arts and crafts, fine art, handmade cosmetics, baked goods and food vendors on the Whalehead grounds, and the event has run on the first Friday after Thanksgiving every year. Its vendor rules explain why the grounds are quiet by the time shoppers arrive. Vendors set up at 8 a.m., their vehicles have to be off the show site by 10:30 a.m., and no vehicles can enter during show hours. Historic Corolla Park itself, at 1160 Village Lane, is listed as free and open to the public. Neither event has published an attendee parking plan or shuttle, so with the day starting at 9 and running past dark, it makes sense to leave the car parked once you're there.
Whalehead's Christmas Candlelight Tours run every Friday and Saturday from November 27 through December 19, from 5 to 6:30 p.m., at $20 per person. Reservations are required and nonrefundable. The event page now says all dates are sold out.
That covers eight evenings, and every one was gone before Halloween. The tour sets the house in its 1920s holiday décor from the years when Edward Collings Knight Jr. and his wife lived there. It includes a live performance on the original Steinway piano custom-designed for Mrs. Knight, a walk through the newly designed Starkey room exhibit, and a holiday treat at the end. John Buford is listed as the pianist for Friday, November 27.
Because of that sellout, the planning effort goes into the village evening. The tour's 5 p.m. start comes an hour after the village opens, so on a typical year a household might have split up for the evening. In 2026, nobody in your group will be stuck at Whalehead, and the 4-to-8 block is open for the village.
Corolla Village Christmas is presented by The Kind Cup and sponsored by The Northern Outer Banks. The Kind Cup is a coffee and art business at 1129 Corolla Village Road. The Northern Outer Banks describes it as an artists' cooperative with more than 30 members who sell locally made crafts and goods. Its coffee is roasted daily in the shop. So a shop with more than 30 members is hosting an evening that advertises more than 30 local artists.
The organizers describe a quarter-mile stroll along Corolla Village Lane, starting at Schoolhouse Lane, with handcrafted goods, hot food, holiday photo spots, Santa and live music. The posted schedule is the same both nights:
Our Epic Project's 2026 event listing confirms wreath and tree sales and the decorating workshop at the village on both November 27 and 28. If you're putting a wreath on a Corolla door this year, you can decorate it on the street and walk it home.
The event has run for several years. Outer Banks Voice called the 2024 edition the "4th Annual Corolla Christmas Village," and it returned in 2025. The 2026 site still shows last year's food vendors, so check the event's own page closer to the date for this year's food lineup.
Saturday is a repeat of Friday evening without the craft village before it. That makes Saturday the easier night for a second visit or for guests who spent Friday at the lighthouse and Whalehead and ran out of energy by 4.
The 2026 climbing season at the Currituck Beach Lighthouse runs March 21 through November 30. Thanksgiving falls on November 26 this year, so the holiday weekend holds the last four climbing days of the season:
Each day runs 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., weather permitting. Climbers must be 4 or older, and the $13 admission is paid on site. Guests who leave Sunday have three tries, and one stormy day takes away a third of them. If the Friday forecast looks good, climb first thing and leave the craft village for late morning. The craft village is a one-day show, and the lighthouse won't open again until next spring.
Two earlier dates are worth putting on the calendar now.
On Saturday, November 7, the Corolla Wild Horse Fund holds its fall open house from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Betsy Dowdy Equine Center, 102 Young Rider Lane in Grandy. The morning includes horse visits and two documentary screenings with Q&As at 10 and 11 a.m., with a suggested donation of $10 per vehicle. The Corolla Wild Horse Fund lists the details.
The second date is for residents who make things. Applications for craft vendors at the 2026 Christmas Craft Village are due November 16 at 5 p.m. The application lists 12-by-12-foot booths with no booth fee and no sales commission. The Northern Outer Banks craft village page carries the event listing. With no fee and no commission, a booth costs you a day on the Whalehead grounds, and that day is the first Friday after Thanksgiving, the event's annual slot.
